1. IT IS THE SECOND-DEEPEST LAKE IN THE UNITED STATES

Lake Tahoe reaches a maximum depth of 1,645 feet. Only Oregon’s Crater Lake is deeper in the United States.

           2. ITS AVERAGE DEPTH IS ABOUT 1,000 FEET

Tahoe is not only deep at one point. Its average depth is roughly 1,000 feet, which helps explain the lake’s immense volume and unusual character.

           3. THE LAKE IS ABOUT 22 MILES LONG AND 12 MILES WIDE

Lake Tahoe covers about 191 square miles. Its shoreline is approximately 75 miles long, although the exact distance varies with lake level.

           4. THE WATER SURFACE SITS HIGH IN THE SIERRA

The lake’s average surface elevation is about 6,225 feet above sea level. The surrounding Tahoe Basin rises even higher, with Freel Peak reaching 10,891 feet.

           5. TAHOE HOLDS ABOUT 39 TRILLION GALLONS OF WATER

That extraordinary volume is one reason the lake feels so vast from every shoreline. Scientists estimate that, if emptied, it would take about 600 years to refill naturally.

           6. ONLY ONE RIVER FLOWS OUT OF LAKE TAHOE

Dozens of streams feed the lake, but the Truckee River is its only outlet. It begins at Tahoe City, flows through Truckee and Reno, and ends at Pyramid Lake.

           7. THE LAKE FORMED OVER MILLIONS OF YEARS

Lake Tahoe developed naturally over roughly three to four million years through faulting, volcanic activity, and glaciation. A dam at Tahoe City now regulates the upper portion of the lake level, so Tahoe is also managed as a reservoir.

           8. ITS CLARITY IS STILL CLOSELY MEASURED

UC Davis researchers have monitored Tahoe continuously for decades. The lake’s average clarity was 69.2 feet in 2025, measured by lowering a white Secchi disk until it disappears from view.

           9. EVEN EVAPORATION HAPPENS ON A HUGE SCALE

About half a billion gallons can evaporate from Lake Tahoe on an average day. UC Davis notes that this amount would meet the daily water needs of roughly five million Americans.

           10. THE TAHOE WATERSHED IS LARGER THAN THE LAKE

The Lake Tahoe Basin covers about 312 square miles. Snowmelt, forests, meadows, streams, roads, and communities throughout that watershed all influence the water that reaches the lake.

           11. LAHONTAN CUTTHROAT TROUT ARE TAHOE’S NATIVE TROUT

The Lahontan cutthroat is the only trout native to the Tahoe Basin and the world’s largest cutthroat trout species. After disappearing from Lake Tahoe in the twentieth century, this threatened fish has become the focus of a major restoration and stocking effort.

The Wildness We Carry

A personal reflection on growing up around Lake Tahoe, the stories passed down through generations, and the connection that inspires Around Tahoe Tours.

As a local, I have grown up hearing countless stories and adventures passed down from my parents and grandparents about Northern Nevada and the Lake Tahoe Basin. Long before I ever understood the history of this region, I was living a small part of it myself. Some of my fondest memories are the simplest ones. Hiking down to the shoreline with Coppertone in hand and a beach towel over my shoulder. Searching for the perfect spot along the sand or pebbled beach. And before anything else, running straight for the water. No matter how cold it was, no matter how long the hike had been, my first thought was always the same: get in the lake.

There was something magical about those moments. The crystal-clear water. The granite boulders that seemed larger than life. The hidden coves waiting to be discovered. I spent countless summers swimming, exploring, and laughing with family and friends. Every now and then I'd stop to catch a crawdad or simply sit along the shoreline and watch the sunlight dance across the water.

As I grew older, my appreciation for Tahoe deepened. What had once been a beautiful playground became something much more. I began to understand the stories behind the places I loved. The people who came before us. The Native communities whose history is woven into this landscape. The pioneers, dreamers, conservationists, and generations of locals who helped shape the Tahoe we know today. What makes Lake Tahoe special isn't just its beauty. It's the stories hidden within its mountains, forests, and shorelines. Every overlook has a tale. Every trail has a history. Every season reveals a different side of the lake's character. From calm summer mornings to powerful winter storms rolling across the water, Tahoe has always carried a sense of wildness that commands respect and inspires wonder.

I believe that wildness still lives within all of us.

In a world that moves faster every year, places like Tahoe remind us to slow down. To step outside. To reconnect with nature, with family and friends, and with something bigger than ourselves. It's one of the reasons people return here year after year. They may come for the scenery, but they leave with memories and connections that stay with them long after the vacation ends. I write this not simply to tell you about a place, but to share a connection. The connection I feel to Lake Tahoe is the same connection we strive to share through Around Tahoe Tours. The Talbot brothers and our team believe that Tahoe is more than a destination. It's a place filled with stories, history, wonder, and memories waiting to be made.

Our goal is simple: to help guests experience Tahoe the way many of us locals have for generations—not just by seeing it, but by truly connecting with it. Whether it's your first visit or your fiftieth, we hope you leave with a deeper appreciation for this remarkable place and perhaps a story of your own to carry home. Because Tahoe is more than a scenic overlook. It's a place that becomes a part of you. And for those fortunate enough to know it, that connection never truly leaves.
